Death Trap: Florida's Opioid Epidemic
The opioid epidemic hit Florida hard and early, and we've continued to see new problems pop up as pill mills were shut down.
On this page you'll find my portion of a half-hour special called 'Death Trap,' which was put together by WFTV's 9 Investigates team. I tell the story of Becca, a woman who fell into addiction the way so many Floridians did during the height of the pill mill epidemic, before getting caught up in heroin.
Below, I investigate what some call 'the new pill mill' and the deadly drugs that can end your life with one dose, known as kill pills.
We continue to investigate the impact of opioids on our communities, including how it's forcing families to take on new roles.
More grandparents are taking on the role of raising their grandchildren, as the middle generation serves time behind bars or in rehab.
